You vs. You
The sooner we learn where our competition lies, the better. Often times we do things to prove we’re better than the next person. Sometimes we use other players’ skills as a benchmark for ourselves. We even set our goals based on what somebody else is or isn’t doing. That’s all the way backwards! When you can focus on being a better you, a better hooper, a better student, a better person… every single day, that’s when you will see continual growth. It’s what you can control. I understand wanting to be a better player than the rest, but lets examine this situation real quick. If you’re on a terrible team and your goal is to best player on the team… that doesn’t mean too much. When you’re in a mediocre league and your goal is simply to make first team, or player of the year… that’s cool, but that doesn’t mean a whole lot. We have to stop putting a ceiling on our goals. Obviously we will compare ourselves to others, but that comparison shouldn’t be the sole motivation for our success. We have to look within and want to be better everyday… those are personal goals worth measuring.
