Not Every Shot!
Let’s go ahead and clear some things up! Wayne Gretzky Jr was on point when he said “You miss 100% of the shots you don’t take!” That’s totally right. If you think about it, how will you ever make a shot if you don’t shoot the ball (or puck in Gretzky’s case)? But let’s go beyond that really quickly, because poor shot selection will kill your game. Just because you have the ball, doesn’t mean you should shoot. Just because you have an open shot, doesn’t mean you should shoot. Just because you haven’t shot in a few possessions, doesn’t mean you should shoot. “OMG! Well when should I shoot?” you ask. Let’s start within the flow of the game. As a coach, when certain plays were called, the players knew where the best shots would come from. The players knew the purpose of the play. Even when you deviate from the play, there are specific reads that the players can make. What I was NOT ok with, whether the shot went in or not, was when a player would shoot and the other four players had no idea they were shooting the ball! I know YOU as the shooter think all your shots are going in, so you don’t really need rebounders… but you couldn’t be any more WRONG! Rebounders are essential to team offense and team defense. But also, your teammates will stop doing what their supposed to do because they don’t know if they’ll get their turn. They’ll start setting bad screens because they just want to get to the next opportunity to shoot. They’ll stop moving the ball because they don’t think they’ll get it back. They’ll force shots on fast breaks because this is finally their opportunity to score (so they feel). So you can’t make a shot you don’t shoot… but you still have to shoot your shots within the scheme of things. #morningthought#motivation#inspiration#encouragement#basketball #hoopers #ballers #getbetter #dobetter
