Today I want to encourage all the hoopers (people as well) to just take the first step. The first step isn’t to go out and shoot 3 million shots. It’s not to practice defensive slides all day. It’s not to be able to dribble two and three balls at the same time. The first step is to BELIEVE that it’ll be worth it and that it will pay off the way you want it to. You have to BELIEVE that it won’t always be like this. I remember when I first started playing basketball I had to do the “follow through” shooting drill before every single workout. No matter what. It would be frustrating because I just wanted to go play. It would take so long (in my head) to hit 10 shots ALL NET, and keep backing away from the basket incrementally. But then it didn’t take as long. And then it was fast. And then I had to make 10 IN A ROW. And then that didn’t take so long.
Guys, things are only hard until one day it’s no longer hard. Whatever move you’re working on, whatever shot you’re trying to nail, whatever defensive technique you want to utilize, whatever role you have to play on this team… I’m encouraging you to give it your all, work on what’s necessary, and before you know it, it will no longer be hard, you’ll feel accomplished, and you’ll feel happy/proud. Then it’s on to the next thing.
